How to Set a Wire Rat Trap

Published in Pest Control 2 mins read

Setting a wire rat trap, often a cage-style trap, is a simple process designed to safely capture a rat.

Steps to Set Your Wire Rat Trap

Based on the operation of a Rentokil DIY Rat Cage Trap, setting this type of wire trap involves preparing the door mechanism to be triggered when a rat enters the cage. Here are the key steps:

  1. Open the Trap Door: Begin by fully opening the main door of the trap.
  2. Engage the Internal Hook: Place the opened door onto the hook located inside the trap. This hook is part of the trigger mechanism that holds the door open.
  3. Maintain Bar Position: During the setting process, ensure that the vertical bar remains in an upright position. This bar is often connected to the trigger plate inside the trap.
  4. Secure the Setting Arms: Pull back on the setting arms to fully open the door and secure the trap mechanism into the set position. This action locks the door in place, ready to be triggered.
  • Tip: Once set, the trap door should be held open by the hook and release mechanism, typically connected to a bait or trigger plate within the cage. When the rat steps on the plate or disturbs the bait, the hook releases the door, trapping the animal inside.

Why Use a Wire Cage Trap?

Wire cage traps are a popular choice for pest control because they offer a humane method of capturing rats. Once caught, the animal can be relocated (following local regulations) or otherwise dealt with appropriately.

Using clear bait like peanut butter or a small piece of fruit on the trigger plate inside the trap can help lure the rat effectively. Ensure the trap is placed on a flat, stable surface in an area where rat activity has been observed.
