What are examples of ADP inhibitors?

Published in Pharmacology 1 min read

ADP inhibitors, also known as P2Y12 receptor inhibitors, are drugs that prevent ADP (adenosine diphosphate) from activating platelets, thus reducing platelet aggregation. This action helps to prevent blood clots. Examples of ADP inhibitors include:

  • Clopidogrel
  • Prasugrel
  • Ticagrelor
  • Ticlopidine

Mechanism of Action

ADP is a substance released from platelets that activates other platelets, leading to platelet aggregation. ADP inhibitors block the ADP receptor (P2Y12 receptor) on platelets, preventing this activation and reducing the formation of blood clots.

Table of ADP Inhibitors

Drug Mechanism
Clopidogrel Blocks the P2Y12 receptor, preventing ADP-mediated platelet activation.
Prasugrel Blocks the P2Y12 receptor, preventing ADP-mediated platelet activation.
Ticagrelor Blocks the P2Y12 receptor, preventing ADP-mediated platelet activation.
Ticlopidine Blocks the P2Y12 receptor, preventing ADP-mediated platelet activation.
