Did God Exist Forever?

Published in Philosophy of Religion 1 min read

The majority philosophical position today suggests that God never began to exist and will never cease to exist, meaning God existed forever.

Philosophically, the concept of God's existence and relationship to time has been debated extensively. Two primary views exist:

  • Everlastingness: God exists within time and experiences temporal succession. He has always existed and will always exist. This view aligns with the referenced material and is the prevailing view among contemporary philosophers.

  • Eternality: God exists outside of time altogether. Time is a creation of God and does not apply to Him. He exists in a single, unchanging "now."

The question "Did God exist forever?" presupposes a linear understanding of time. Therefore, considering the predominant philosophical view of God's everlastingness, the answer is yes. God, in this context, is seen as temporal but without beginning or end.
