How Do I Change From Portrait to Landscape in Photopea?

Published in Photopea Editing 3 mins read

The easiest way to change from portrait to landscape in Photopea is to use the Rotate View tool, or more conventionally resize or transform the document. Here's a breakdown of how you can achieve this:

1. Rotate the View (Visually, Not Permanently):

  • Photopea has a Rotate View tool located under the Hand tool.
  • Click and drag your document to rotate it on your screen. This doesn't change the actual dimensions of your project; it simply rotates your view.
  • To revert to the original orientation, click Reset at the top of the Photopea interface.

2. Change the Image Dimensions (Permanently):

This is the most common and effective method for changing a portrait image to landscape.

  • Go to Image in the top menu.
  • Select Image Size.
  • In the Image Size dialog box, you'll see the current width and height. Swap the values to switch between portrait and landscape. For example, if your image is currently 1000 pixels wide and 1500 pixels high (portrait), change it to 1500 pixels wide and 1000 pixels high (landscape).
  • Make sure the "Constrain Proportions" option is unchecked if you want to change the aspect ratio (shape) of the image. If it's checked, changing one dimension will automatically adjust the other to maintain the original proportions, and you'll just be scaling, not changing from portrait to landscape.
  • Click OK.

3. Transform the Image (If It's on a Layer):

This method works if your content is on a layer.

  • Select the layer you want to transform in the Layers panel.
  • Go to Edit in the top menu.
  • Choose Free Transform.
  • You can now rotate, scale, skew, or distort the layer. Rotate it by 90 degrees.
  • Hit the checkmark at the top of the interface to commit the changes. You might need to adjust the canvas size afterward (see step 2) to accommodate the rotated layer if it extends beyond the original canvas boundaries.

Important Considerations:

  • Resolution: When changing the image size, be mindful of the resolution. Increasing the dimensions will make the image larger, but if you don't have enough pixels, it might look blurry. Decreasing dimensions can reduce the file size but might also reduce image quality.
  • Content Alignment: After changing the image dimensions or rotating a layer, you might need to adjust the positioning of elements within your project to achieve the desired layout.
