How Do I Add Custom Actions to Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Actions 4 mins read

Adding custom actions to Photoshop allows you to automate repetitive tasks and streamline your workflow. Here's how you do it:

Steps to Load and Use Custom Actions:

  1. Open the Actions Panel: Go to the Window menu in Photoshop and select Actions. This will open the Actions panel.

  2. Access the Actions Panel Menu: In the Actions panel, click the menu icon (usually three horizontal lines or a gear icon) in the upper-right corner.

  3. Load Actions: Scroll down in the menu and select Load Actions... This will open a file browser window.

  4. Locate the Actions File: Navigate to the folder where your .ATN file (the Photoshop action file) is saved. These files are often downloaded from online resources or created yourself.

  5. Open the .ATN File: Double-click the .ATN file to load the action set into the Actions panel. The new action set should now appear within the Actions panel.

  6. Select and Play the Action: Expand the newly loaded action set (if necessary) to view individual actions. Select the specific action you want to use. Then, click the Play button (the triangle pointing to the right) at the bottom of the Actions panel.

Creating Your Own Actions (Quick Overview):

While the above steps explain how to load pre-made actions, you can also create your own:

  1. Create a New Action Set (Optional): To keep things organized, click the "Create new set" folder icon at the bottom of the Actions panel. Name the set.
  2. Start Recording: Select the action set (or just select "Default Actions" if you didn't create a set). Then, click the "Create new action" icon (looks like a page with a turned-down corner) at the bottom of the Actions panel. Name your action and click Record.
  3. Perform the Steps: Perform the exact steps you want Photoshop to automate. Every action you take will be recorded.
  4. Stop Recording: When you've completed the steps, click the Stop button (the square icon) at the bottom of the Actions panel.

Example:

Let's say you frequently resize images to 800x600 pixels and sharpen them. You can create an action to do this automatically:

  1. Create a new action named "Resize and Sharpen."
  2. Record the action.
  3. Go to Image > Image Size and enter 800 for width and 600 for height. Click OK.
  4. Go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask (or your preferred sharpening filter) and adjust the settings. Click OK.
  5. Stop recording.

Now, whenever you want to resize and sharpen an image, simply select your "Resize and Sharpen" action and click the Play button.

Troubleshooting:

  • Action Not Working: Make sure you have the correct document open and that the action is compatible with the current image mode (e.g., RGB, CMYK). Some actions may require specific layers or selections.
  • Missing .ATN File: If you can't find the .ATN file after downloading, check your downloads folder or the folder where you saved it. Ensure the file wasn't accidentally deleted.
  • Photoshop Version Compatibility: Older actions might not work with newer versions of Photoshop, and vice versa. Try finding actions specifically designed for your version.

By following these steps, you can easily add custom actions to Photoshop, automate your workflow, and save valuable time.
