How do I create a new image in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Basics 2 mins read

To create a new image in Photoshop, you'll primarily use the "New Document" dialog. Here's how:

  1. Open Photoshop.

  2. Go to File > New... (or press Ctrl+N on Windows or Cmd+N on macOS). This opens the "New Document" dialog.

  3. Specify your desired settings:

    • Name: Give your new document a name.
    • Width and Height: Enter the desired width and height for your image in the units you prefer (pixels, inches, centimeters, etc.).
    • Resolution: Set the resolution, typically 300 dpi for print and 72 dpi for web.
    • Color Mode: Choose your color mode. RGB is common for web and screen use, while CMYK is typical for print.
    • Background Contents: Select the background color or transparency for your new image (White, Black, Background Color, Transparent, or Custom).
    • Color Profile: Choose the appropriate color profile based on your intended use. sRGB is a common choice for web.
    • Pixel Aspect Ratio: Generally, leave this set to "Square Pixels" unless you have a specific need to change it.
  4. Click "Create". A new document with your specified settings will open in Photoshop.

You can always adjust the width and height after opening the "New Document" dialog by typing different values into the respective fields.
