How do I edit the path in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Editing 3 mins read

To edit a path in Photoshop, you'll primarily use the Path Selection Tool or the Direct Selection Tool. Here's how:

  1. Select the Path Selection Tool or Direct Selection Tool: You can find these tools in the toolbar. The Path Selection Tool (often represented by a black arrow) selects entire paths, while the Direct Selection Tool (a white arrow) selects individual anchor points and segments within a path. You can also press A on your keyboard to toggle between them.

  2. Choose the Path: If you have multiple paths, make sure the one you want to edit is selected in the Paths panel (Window > Paths). Then, click on the path you want to modify in your image.

  3. Editing with the Path Selection Tool: This tool allows you to:

    • Move the Entire Path: Click and drag to reposition the entire path.
    • Transform the Path: Use the Edit > Transform Path options (Scale, Rotate, Skew, Distort, Perspective, Warp) to change the overall shape and size.
  4. Editing with the Direct Selection Tool: This tool allows for more granular control:

    • Select Anchor Points: Click on an anchor point to select it. You can select multiple points by holding Shift while clicking.
    • Move Anchor Points: Drag selected anchor points to change the path's shape.
    • Adjust Handles: When you select an anchor point, you might see handles extending from it. These handles control the curve of the path segment connected to that point. Drag the handles to adjust the curve.
    • Add or Delete Anchor Points: Use the Pen tool (+) to add anchor points or the Pen tool (-) to delete them. Hover the Pen tool over a path segment to add a point; hover over an existing anchor point to delete it.
    • Convert Smooth Points to Corner Points (and vice versa): Use the Convert Point Tool (found under the Pen tool) to click on an anchor point to switch between a smooth curve (with handles) and a sharp corner (without handles).

Example Scenario:

Let's say you've drawn a path around an object you want to cut out. You notice the path isn't quite right in one area.

  1. Select the Direct Selection Tool (A).
  2. Select the path in the Paths panel.
  3. Click on the anchor point that's out of place.
  4. Drag the anchor point to the correct position.
  5. If needed, adjust the handles extending from the anchor point to fine-tune the curve of the path segment.

By understanding the Path Selection and Direct Selection tools, along with the concepts of anchor points and handles, you can effectively edit paths in Photoshop to achieve precise results.
