How Do I Remove a Smart Object in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Editing 2 mins read

To remove a smart object layer in Photoshop, simply delete the layer itself. Here's how:

Steps to Delete a Smart Object Layer:

  1. Locate the Layer: In the Layers panel, find the layer that contains the smart object you want to remove. Smart object layers are typically identified by a small icon in the layer thumbnail.

  2. Select the Layer: Click on the layer name to select it.

  3. Delete the Layer: There are two ways to delete the selected layer:

    • Method 1: Using the Delete Icon: At the bottom of the Layers panel, you'll find a trash can icon (the "Delete" icon). Click this icon. Photoshop might ask you to confirm the deletion.

    • Method 2: Using the Delete Key: Press the "Delete" key (or "Backspace" on some keyboards) on your keyboard.

Important Considerations:

  • Deleting a smart object layer permanently removes it from your document. If you think you might need the smart object later, consider duplicating the layer before deleting it.
  • This process only deletes the layer containing the instance of the smart object in your current document. The original smart object file (if it's a linked or embedded file) remains unaffected.
  • If you want to rasterize (convert to a regular pixel-based layer) the contents of a Smart Object, you would right-click on the smart object layer and select "Rasterize Layer." This is different than deleting the layer. Rasterizing keeps the content but removes the smart object functionality.

By following these steps, you can easily remove a smart object layer from your Photoshop document.
