How Do You Add Area in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Editing 3 mins read

Adding area in Photoshop typically refers to increasing the canvas size or adding pixels around an existing image. Here's how to do it, covering various methods:

1. Using the Crop Tool to Expand Canvas:

  • Select the Crop Tool (C).
  • Drag the handles of the crop boundary outwards beyond the existing image boundaries. This will reveal a transparent area around your image.
  • Press Enter or click the checkmark in the options bar to commit the crop. This newly created space will be filled with your background color (or transparency).

2. Using the Canvas Size Command:

  • Go to Image > Canvas Size.
  • Adjust the Width and Height values. You can enter specific pixel dimensions, percentages, inches, etc.
  • Use the Anchor grid to specify which side or corner of the image the additional area will be added to. For example, if you want to add space equally on all sides, click the center square.
  • Choose a Canvas extension color. This will be the color of the newly added area (e.g., white, black, background color, or a custom color).
  • Click OK.

3. Using the "Content-Aware Scale" Method (for Extending Backgrounds):

This method is useful for seamlessly extending backgrounds or repetitive patterns.

  • If you need to extend a background, first make a selection of the area you want to keep as-is, then inverse the selection to only have your background selected.
  • Go to Edit > Content-Aware Scale.
  • Drag one of the side handles to extend the image area. Photoshop will intelligently fill in the new area based on the surrounding content.
  • This method works best with backgrounds that have a consistent texture or pattern.

4. Using the "Content-Aware Fill" Method (for Specific areas):

  • Use a selection tool (Lasso, Marquee, etc.) to select the specific area around where you want to create new content.
  • Go to Edit > Content-Aware Fill.
  • Photoshop will analyze the surrounding areas and intelligently fill in the selected region, thus "adding area". You may need to refine the selection or use the sampling brush to get the desired result.

Example Scenarios:

  • Adding a border: Use Canvas Size to add a uniform area around the image and choose a specific border color.
  • Extending a sky: Use Content-Aware Scale to stretch the sky upward while keeping the horizon line in place.
  • Creating room for text: Use the Crop Tool or Canvas Size to add space on one side of an image to accommodate text.

Remember to choose the method that best suits the specific needs of your image and the effect you are trying to achieve. Experiment with different techniques to find the most effective approach.
