How do you feather a magic wand selection in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Editing 1 min read

To feather a selection made with the Magic Wand tool in Photoshop, follow these steps:

  1. Make a Selection: Use the Magic Wand tool to select the area you want to feather.

  2. Access the Feather Option: Go to the "Select" menu in the top menu bar, then choose "Modify," and finally select "Feather."

  3. Enter Feather Radius: A dialog box will appear asking for the "Feather Radius." Enter the desired radius value in pixels. This value determines how much the selection edges will be blurred. A higher value creates a softer, more gradual transition.

  4. Confirm: Click "OK" to apply the feathering effect.

The selection will now have a feathered edge. Any edits you make within the selection (e.g., painting, adjusting brightness) will gradually fade out at the edges due to the feathering. The "Feather Radius" setting is crucial; experiment to find the best value for your specific image and the desired effect. For high-resolution images, a larger feather radius is generally needed.
