How to Export Artboards in Photoshop with Transparent Background?

Published in Photoshop Export 2 mins read

To export artboards in Photoshop with a transparent background, you need to set the artboard background to transparent before exporting. Here's how:

Steps:

  1. Select the Artboard: In the Layers panel, click on the artboard you want to export. Make sure the correct artboard is selected.

  2. Access the Properties Panel: If the Properties panel isn't visible, go to Window > Properties.

  3. Set Artboard Background to Transparent: In the Properties panel, look for the "Artboard background color" option. It's usually a color swatch. Click the dropdown menu and select "Transparent." This removes any background color that might be obscuring transparency.

  4. Export the Artboard: Now you can export the artboard. Go to File > Export > Export As... or File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)... (depending on your Photoshop version and desired export format).

  5. Choose Export Settings: In the export dialog box, choose the appropriate format (PNG is typically recommended for transparency). Ensure that the "Transparency" option is checked or enabled.

    • Export As: Select PNG and ensure "Transparency" is checked.
    • Save for Web (Legacy): Select PNG-24 and make sure "Transparency" is checked.
  6. Export: Click the "Export" or "Save" button and choose a location to save your file.

Why Use PNG?

PNG is the preferred format for preserving transparency because it supports an alpha channel, which allows for varying degrees of transparency. Other formats, like JPEG, do not support transparency and will replace transparent areas with a solid color (usually white).

Troubleshooting:

  • Background Still Shows: Double-check that you've correctly set the artboard background to "Transparent" in the Properties panel before exporting.
  • Incorrect Export Settings: Verify that the export settings (e.g., format, transparency option) are configured properly in the export dialog box.
  • Layer Opacity: Make sure that the layers within the artboard that you intend to be transparent are actually set to 0% opacity where needed. A layer with 100% opacity will always be visible regardless of the artboard transparency settings.

By following these steps, you can easily export your Photoshop artboards with a transparent background, making them suitable for use in various design projects and applications.
