How do I add filters to a group in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Filters 3 mins read

To add filters to a group in Photoshop, you need to convert the group into a smart object first. Here's how:

Steps to Apply Filters to a Group

  1. Select Layers: In the Layers panel, select all the layers you want to include in your group.
  2. Create a Group: Press Ctrl/Cmd + G, or go to Layer > Group Layers to create a new group from your selection.
  3. Convert to Smart Object: Convert the newly created group into a smart object. This can be done in a couple of ways:
    • Right-click on the group in the Layers panel and select Convert to Smart Object.
    • Alternatively, go to Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object.
  4. Apply Filters: With the group now a smart object, you can apply filters or adjustments as you would to any other layer. Go to Filter menu and choose the desired filter, or go to the adjustments panel.

By converting the group into a smart object, you are able to apply filters to all layers within the group simultaneously as a single entity, rather than applying filters to each layer individually. This method allows you to keep the filters non-destructive and fully editable.

Why Use Smart Objects?

  • Non-Destructive Editing: Filters applied to smart objects can be modified or removed at any time without permanently changing the original layers.
  • Editable Filters: Smart filters remain editable. You can adjust their settings after they've been applied.
  • Flexibility: Smart objects allow for easier management of complex projects, keeping your layers panel organized.

Example

Let's say you have three layers: Layer 1, Layer 2, and Layer 3, which you want to apply a blur filter to. Instead of applying the blur filter to each layer separately, you can:

  • Select Layers 1, 2, and 3 in the layers panel.
  • Press Ctrl/Cmd + G to create a group called "Group 1."
  • Right-click on "Group 1" and select "Convert to Smart Object".
  • Now, apply a blur filter to the smart object. This will affect all layers inside the smart object group.

Step Action
1 Select the desired layers.
2 Create a group (Ctrl/Cmd + G).
3 Convert the group into a smart object.
4 Apply filters or adjustments to the smart object.
