Using gradient files in Photoshop primarily involves applying gradients using the Gradient Tool or Gradient Fill Layers, and loading custom gradient .grd
files into the program for use.
Here's how you can use gradients and gradient files in Photoshop:
Gradients can be applied in several ways, most commonly using the Gradient Tool or a Gradient Fill Layer. When applying a gradient, you often interact with the Gradient Editor to choose or customize the gradient itself.
1. Using the Gradient Tool (G)
The Gradient Tool applies a gradient directly to a layer or selection. It's great for applying gradients non-destructively if used on a blank layer with a blending mode, or destructively if applied directly to pixel content.
- Select the Tool: Choose the Gradient Tool (G) from the Tools panel.
- Choose a Gradient: In the Options bar at the top, click the gradient preview to open the Gradient Picker. Select a preset gradient or click on the currently displayed gradient bar to open the Gradient Editor for customization.
- Customize (Optional): In the Gradient Editor, you can modify the gradient.
- Add Colors: You have the option to add additional colors by clicking between the bottom handles (color stops). This creates new color stops you can adjust.
- Select Colors: To select the color for a specific handle (color stop), double-click on the handle. This will open a window where you can choose the color you want.
- You can also adjust opacity using the top handles (opacity stops).
- Apply the Gradient: Click and drag on your canvas. The gradient will be applied along the line you draw. The type of gradient (Linear, Radial, Angle, Reflected, Diamond) can be selected from the Options bar.
2. Using a Gradient Fill Layer
A Gradient Fill Layer is a non-destructive way to apply a gradient. It exists as a separate layer in the Layers panel and can be easily edited or masked.
- Add Fill Layer: Go to
Layer > New Fill Layer > Gradient...
or click the Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel and chooseGradient...
. - Configure Gradient: In the Gradient Fill dialog box, click the gradient preview to open the Gradient Picker/Editor, similar to the Gradient Tool.
- Customize: Use the Gradient Editor to select a preset or modify the colors and opacity stops, as described above (clicking between bottom handles to add colors, double-clicking handles to select colors).
- Set Options: Choose the Style (Linear, Radial, etc.), Angle, Scale, and other options.
- Edit: Double-clicking the Gradient Fill Layer thumbnail in the Layers panel reopens the dialog box for editing.
Loading Gradient Files (.grd)
If you have gradient files saved on your computer (typically with a .grd
extension), you can load them into Photoshop to add them to your preset gradients.
-
Method 1: Using the Gradient Picker
- Open the Gradient Picker either via the Gradient Tool's Options bar or the Gradient Fill Layer dialog box.
- Click the gear icon (settings menu) at the top right of the Gradient Picker panel.
- Select
Import Gradients...
. - Navigate to the
.grd
file on your computer, select it, and clickLoad
orOpen
.
-
Method 2: Using the Preset Manager
- Go to
Edit > Presets > Preset Manager...
. - In the Preset Manager dialog box, choose
Gradients
from the Preset Type dropdown menu. - Click the
Load...
button on the right. - Navigate to the
.grd
file on your computer, select it, and clickLoad
orOpen
. - Click
Done
when finished.
- Go to
Loading a .grd
file adds the gradients contained within that file to your list of available gradient presets, which you can then use with the Gradient Tool or Gradient Fill Layers.
