How do I insert an image in a Selection in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Image Editing 1 min read

To insert an image directly into a selection in Photoshop, effectively masking it within the selected area, use the "Paste Into" command. Here's how:

  1. Make Your Selection: Use any of Photoshop's selection tools (e.g., Lasso, Rectangular Marquee, Quick Selection) to create the selection outline where you want the image to appear.

  2. Copy the Image: Open the image you want to insert and copy it to your clipboard. You can do this by going to Edit > Copy or using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+C (Windows) or ⌘+C (Mac).

  3. Paste Into Selection: With your selection active in the target document, go to Edit > Paste Special > Paste Into. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Shift+Ctrl+V (Windows) or Shift+⌘+V (Mac).

Photoshop will automatically create a new layer for the pasted image and apply a layer mask based on your selection. This means the pasted image will only be visible within the boundaries of your original selection. You can then move and scale the inserted image within the mask as needed.
