How to Get Photoshop to Generate Images

Published in Photoshop Image Generation 2 mins read

You can generate images in Adobe Photoshop using its generative AI features, primarily the "Generate Image" function when starting a new project.

Steps to Generate an Image in Photoshop

Photoshop utilizes Adobe's powerful generative AI models to create images from text descriptions. Here's how you can use the "Generate Image" feature, especially when beginning with a blank canvas:

  1. Start with a Blank Canvas: Open Photoshop and create a new document.
  2. Locate the Contextual Task Bar: Once your new, blank canvas is open, a Contextual Task Bar should appear, typically near the bottom of the workspace. This bar provides relevant actions based on your current task.
  3. Select Generate Image: In the Contextual Task Bar that appears on a blank canvas, Select Generate Image.
  4. Enter Your Prompt: A text box will appear where you can type a description of the image you want to create. Be as descriptive as possible.
  5. Refine Settings (Optional):
    • Choose the Content type (Art or Photo). This helps guide the AI towards the desired style.
    • You can also select Style Effects to apply to your image for further artistic control.
  6. Generate: Click the Generate button.

Photoshop will then process your request and provide several variations of the generated image in the Properties panel. You can then choose your favorite, make further edits, or generate more variations.

While the "Generate Image" function is ideal for starting from scratch, Photoshop also offers Generative Fill and Generative Expand features that allow you to add, remove, or extend content within existing images using similar text prompts.
