How to Install Adobe Photoshop ZIP File?

Published in Photoshop Installation 3 mins read

Installing an Adobe Photoshop ZIP file, especially if it contains actions or presets, typically involves extracting the contents and then importing them into Photoshop. Here's how:

  1. Extract the ZIP File: Locate the downloaded ZIP file on your computer. Right-click on the ZIP file and select "Extract All..." (Windows) or double-click it (macOS) to unzip the contents to a new folder.

  2. Identify the File Type: Inside the extracted folder, look for files with specific extensions that Photoshop recognizes. Common extensions include:

    • .atn (Photoshop Actions)
    • .tpl (Photoshop Tool Presets)
    • .aco (Photoshop Color Swatches)
    • .grd (Photoshop Gradients)
    • .pat (Photoshop Patterns)
    • .psd (Photoshop Document) - for templates
    • .csh (Custom Shapes)
  3. Install Actions (.atn files): There are two ways to install Photoshop Actions:

    • Double-Click Method: Locate the .atn file within the extracted folder. Simply double-click the .atn file. Photoshop should automatically launch (if it's not already open) and load the action set into the Actions panel. If it doesn't open, try the method below.

    • Load Actions via Photoshop:

      • Open Adobe Photoshop.
      • Go to Window > Actions. This will open the Actions panel.
      • In the Actions panel, click on the menu icon (usually three horizontal lines) in the upper right corner.
      • Select "Load Actions..."
      • Navigate to the folder where you extracted the ZIP file and select the .atn file.
      • Click "Open". The action set will now be loaded into the Actions panel.
  4. Install Brushes (.abr files): This step is relevant if the zip file contains Photoshop brushes.

    • Open Photoshop: Launch Adobe Photoshop.
    • Open the Brushes Panel: Go to Window > Brushes.
    • Import the Brush File: Click on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the upper-right corner of the Brushes panel. Choose "Import Brushes...".
    • Locate the .abr file: In the file dialog box, navigate to the extracted folder, select the .abr file (Photoshop brush file), and click "Load" or "Open". The brushes will now appear in your Brushes panel. You can also install by double-clicking on the ABR file.
  5. Install Other Presets (Patterns, Gradients, Styles, etc.): The process is similar for other preset types. You'll typically find an "Import" or "Load" option within the corresponding panel (e.g., Pattern panel, Gradient panel, Styles panel).

  6. Using Photoshop Documents (.psd files) If the Zip contains a PSD file, simply open the file in Photoshop by going to File > Open and navigating to the file location.

Troubleshooting:

  • Incompatible Photoshop Version: Ensure that the actions or presets are compatible with your version of Photoshop. Older actions might not work with newer versions, and vice versa.
  • Missing Dependencies: Some actions rely on specific fonts or filters. Make sure you have all the required dependencies installed. The creator of the .atn file should include these dependecies or note them where you downloaded the action from.
  • Corrupted ZIP File: If you encounter errors during extraction, the ZIP file might be corrupted. Try downloading it again.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully install the contents of your Adobe Photoshop ZIP file.
