How do I copy and paste multiple layers in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Layers 3 mins read

You can copy and paste multiple layers in Photoshop by targeting the layers you want to copy and using keyboard shortcuts or menu options.

Here's how:

Method 1: Keyboard Shortcuts (Paste in Place)

  1. Select the layers: In the Layers panel, click on the first layer you want to copy. Hold down the Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) key and click on any other layers you want to add to your selection. To select a consecutive group of layers, click the first layer, hold down the Shift key, and click the last layer.
  2. Copy the layers: Press Ctrl + C (Windows) or Cmd + C (Mac) to copy the selected layers.
  3. Go to the target document/location: Open the document or navigate to the location within the same document where you want to paste the layers.
  4. Paste in place: Press Ctrl + Shift + V (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + V (Mac) to paste the layers into the exact same position they occupied in the original document. This is often the preferred method.

Method 2: Drag and Drop

  1. Select the layers: (As described above) In the Layers panel, click on the first layer you want to copy. Hold down the Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) key and click on any other layers you want to add to your selection. To select a consecutive group of layers, click the first layer, hold down the Shift key, and click the last layer.
  2. Drag the layers: Click and drag the selected layers from the Layers panel of the source document to the Layers panel of the target document.

Method 3: Copy and Paste from the Menu

  2. Copy: Go to the Edit menu and select Copy.
  3. Go to the target document/location: Open the document or navigate to the location within the same document where you want to paste the layers.
  4. Paste: Go to the Edit menu and select Paste. The layers will be pasted into the center of the canvas by default. You can then move them as needed. To paste in place, use method 1.

Important Considerations:

  • Layer Order: Pasted layers will be added to the top of the Layers panel in the destination document.
  • Resolution and Dimensions: If the source and destination documents have different resolutions or dimensions, the pasted layers may appear scaled or distorted.
  • Layer Masks and Effects: Layer masks and effects are generally preserved when copying and pasting.
  • Smart Objects: If a layer is a Smart Object, the entire Smart Object will be copied.
  • Layer Groups: You can copy entire layer groups.
