How Do I Send a Layer Back in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Layers 2 mins read

To send a layer backward in Photoshop, you have two main methods: using the Layers panel or using the Arrange menu.

Method 1: Using the Layers Panel

This is the most visual and often the easiest method.

  1. Locate the Layers Panel: Ensure the Layers panel is visible. If it's not, go to Window > Layers.
  2. Select the Layer: Click on the layer you want to move back in the Layers panel.
  3. Drag and Drop: Click and drag the selected layer below the layer you want it to be behind. A highlighted line will indicate where the layer will be placed when you release the mouse button.

Method 2: Using the Arrange Menu

This method offers more specific control and can be useful when dealing with many layers.

  1. Select the Layer: In the Layers panel, click on the layer you want to move back.
  2. Navigate to Arrange: Go to Layer > Arrange.
  3. Choose an Option:
    • Send Backward: Moves the selected layer one step backward in the stacking order.
    • Send to Back: Moves the selected layer to the very bottom of the layer stack (behind all other normal layers). This excludes the background layer, if one exists.

In summary, you can either drag and drop the layer within the Layers panel or use the Layer > Arrange menu to send a layer backward in Photoshop.
