How Do I Change the Scale of Patterns in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Pattern Scale 3 mins read

To change the scale of a pattern you've applied in Photoshop, you need to access the Pattern Overlay options within the Layer Style panel.

Here are the steps to adjust pattern scale:

Accessing Pattern Overlay Options

The first step is to open the Layer Style panel for the layer containing the pattern.

  1. Click on “Effects” (or anywhere in the “Effects” area, but not on the name of the Layer itself). This will open the Layer Style Panel.
  2. Click on Pattern Overlay in the Style options to make it active. Doing so will open the Pattern Overlay options window in the right.

Adjusting the Pattern Scale

Once the Pattern Overlay options window is open, you will see various controls for customizing the pattern's appearance.

Using the Scale Slider

Within the Pattern Overlay options, locate the "Scale" option. This is typically represented by a slider and a numerical input field.

  • Slider: Drag the slider to the left to decrease the pattern scale (make it smaller) or to the right to increase the scale (make it larger).
  • Input Field: Alternatively, you can type a specific percentage value directly into the numerical input field next to the "Scale" label. 100% represents the pattern's original size.

As you adjust the scale, you will see the pattern update in real-time on your canvas, allowing you to preview the effect.

Other Useful Pattern Overlay Options

While adjusting the scale, you might also find these options helpful:

  • Opacity: Controls the transparency of the pattern.
  • Blend Mode: Determines how the pattern interacts with the pixels below it.
  • Link with Layer: (Usually checked by default) Ensures that the pattern moves along with the layer content if you transform or move the layer. Unchecking this allows the pattern to remain static while the layer moves.
  • Snap to Origin: Aligns the pattern's origin point with the document's origin (top-left corner).

To finalize your changes, click OK in the Layer Style panel.

Changing the pattern scale is a key way to ensure your pattern looks appropriate for the size and resolution of your design. Experimenting with different scale values can significantly alter the visual impact of the pattern.
