To increase size in Photoshop, you can use the Transform tool to resize layers or selections.
Resizing Using the Transform Tool (Ctrl+T
/Cmd+T
)
One common way to increase the size of elements within your Photoshop document, such as layers or selected areas, is by using the Free Transform tool. This method is activated via a simple keyboard shortcut and allows for interactive resizing directly on your canvas.
Steps to Resize
Here are the steps to resize an object or layer using the Transform tool:
- Select the Layer or Object: In the Layers panel, click on the layer you want to resize. If you want to resize a specific part of an image, first make a selection using a Marquee, Lasso, or other selection tool.
- Activate Transform: Press
Ctrl + T
on Windows orCmd + T
on Mac. This will activate the Free Transform tool, showing a bounding box with handles around your selected content. - Drag to Resize: Click and drag any of the corner handles of the bounding box outwards to increase the size of the object or selection.
- Maintain Aspect Ratio: To keep the original proportions (prevent distortion), hold down the
Shift
key while dragging a corner handle. This ensures the width and height change together proportionally. - Commit the Transformation: Once you are satisfied with the new size, press the
Enter
key (Windows) orReturn
key (Mac) to apply the transformation. Alternatively, you can click the checkmark icon in the Options bar at the top.
Practical Tips
- Holding
Alt
(Windows) orOption
(Mac) while dragging a corner handle resizes the object from its center point. - Combining
Shift + Alt
(Win) orShift + Option
(Mac) resizes proportionally from the center. - You can also enter specific width and height values (in pixels, percentage, etc.) in the Options bar while the Transform tool is active.
This method is ideal for scaling layers, Smart Objects, text, or selections within your existing document canvas.
