Where is the Modify option in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Selection Tools 2 mins read

The "Modify" option in Photoshop isn't a standalone menu item. Instead, it's a submenu found within the "Select" menu and is used to refine existing selections. Here's how to find it:

Accessing the Modify Submenu

  1. Make a Selection: First, you need to have an active selection. Use any of Photoshop's selection tools (e.g., Lasso Tool, Marquee Tool, Quick Selection Tool, etc.) to select an area of your image.

  2. Go to the Select Menu: In the Photoshop menu bar at the top of the screen, click on "Select."

  3. Find Modify: In the dropdown menu that appears, you'll find the "Modify" option. Hovering over "Modify" will reveal a submenu with various options for modifying your selection.

Available Modify Options

The "Modify" submenu includes the following options:

  • Border: Creates a border around the selection.
  • Smooth: Smooths out jagged edges of the selection.
  • Expand: Enlarges the selection area.
  • Contract: Shrinks the selection area.
  • Feather: Blurs the edges of the selection.

Example: Expanding a Selection

Let's say you want to expand an existing selection by a few pixels. Here's how:

  1. Make a selection with your preferred tool.
  2. Go to Select > Modify > Expand.
  3. In the "Expand Selection" dialog box, enter the number of pixels by which you want to expand the selection (e.g., a value between 1 and 100).
  4. Click "OK."

The selection will now be expanded according to the specified pixel value. The "Contract" option works similarly, shrinking the selection instead of expanding it.
