How do I create a custom shape size in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Shapes 3 mins read

You can create a custom shape size in Photoshop by using the Custom Shape tool and adjusting its dimensions.

Steps to create custom shape sizes:

  1. Select the Custom Shape Tool: In the Photoshop toolbar, find and select the "Custom Shape Tool" (it looks like a puzzle piece or abstract shape).

  2. Choose a Shape: In the options bar at the top, click on the shape dropdown (it usually shows the last shape used). This is the "Custom Shape Picker" pop-up mentioned in the reference.

  3. Browse Available Shapes: Click the arrow at the top right of the panel to list the shapes. You can select how the shapes are displayed (small thumbnails, large thumbnails, list etc.). Select the shape you wish to use from the picker.

  4. Setting Size: You can now set the width and height of the custom shape by dragging on your canvas. The reference notes this as "Lets you set the width and height of a rectangle, rounded rectangle, ellipse, or custom shape by dragging".

    • Click and Drag: Click your mouse on the canvas where you want the shape to begin. Then, while holding the mouse button, drag to expand the shape. This allows you to visually set its size.
    • Proportional Scaling: Hold down the Shift key while dragging to maintain the shape's proportions.
    • Start from Center: Hold down the Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) key while dragging to draw from the center point outward.
    • Precise Width and Height: While you are dragging or after you’ve created the shape, you can use the options in the Options Bar. You'll see fields where you can enter exact pixel values for the width and height of your shape.
  5. Release: Release the mouse button when you're happy with the size and position of your shape.

Additional Information

  • You can modify the shape's properties further using the Properties panel (Window > Properties), including fill color, stroke, and more, after it has been created.
  • The Custom Shape Tool can also be used to draw predefined shape types (rectangle, ellipse, etc.), not only custom shapes.
  • Consider setting up a new layer for each new shape created, making it easier to modify or delete the shapes later.

By following these steps, you can easily create custom shape sizes in Photoshop to meet your specific design needs.
