How do you duplicate a selection shape in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop Techniques 1 min read

To duplicate a selection shape in Photoshop, you typically duplicate the layer containing the content within the selection. Here's how:

  1. Make your selection: Use any of Photoshop's selection tools (e.g., Rectangular Marquee, Lasso, Magic Wand) to create the shape you want to duplicate.

  2. Copy and Paste:

    • Press Ctrl+C (Windows) or Cmd+C (Mac) to copy the selected area.
    • Press Ctrl+V (Windows) or Cmd+V (Mac) to paste the selection. This automatically creates a new layer containing only the copied selection.
  3. Duplicate Layer (Alternative): Make sure the layer containing the selection is selected. Then, right-click on the layer in the Layers panel and choose "Duplicate Layer". You can also drag the layer to the "+" icon at the bottom of the Layers panel to duplicate it.

  4. Move the duplicate: Use the Move tool (V) to drag the duplicated selection (now on its own layer) to the desired location.

This process effectively duplicates the content within your selection shape onto a new layer, allowing you to manipulate it independently.
