How to Change Fill in Photoshop

Published in Photoshop Tools 2 mins read

To change the fill of a layer or selection in Photoshop using the Edit menu, you can follow a simple process.

Steps to Change Fill Using the Edit Menu

Photoshop provides a direct command to fill areas with various content, including colors, patterns, or content-aware fill. Here are the steps based on the standard Photoshop workflow:

  1. Begin by selecting the area you wish to fill, or ensure the desired layer is active if filling the entire layer.
  2. Go to the main menu at the top of the screen.
  3. Choose Edit > Fill Layer, or Edit > Fill Selection. The choice depends on whether you want to fill the entire active layer or only a specific selected area within it.
  4. This action opens the Fill dialog box. This box presents various options for the fill content and blending.
  5. Within the Fill dialog box, you will Set options in the Fill dialog box, and then click OK.
  6. Crucially, from the "Use" dropdown menu within the dialog box, you will Choose a color from the Use menu or select other fill content options like Foreground Color, Background Color, Content-Aware, Pattern, History, Black, 50% Gray, or White.
  7. Once you have configured the fill content and other settings (like blending mode and opacity), click OK to apply the fill to your layer or selection.

This process allows you to quickly replace the existing pixels within the target area with new content based on your selection in the Fill dialog box.
