What is SPT in PT?

Published in Physical Therapy Education 1 min read

SPT in PT stands for Student Physical Therapist.

A Student Physical Therapist (SPT) is an individual who is currently enrolled in a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program and is undergoing the necessary education and training to become a licensed physical therapist. The role involves a combination of classroom learning and clinical experiences. During clinical rotations, SPTs work under the supervision of licensed physical therapists (often referred to as Clinical Instructors or CIs), gaining hands-on experience in patient evaluation, treatment planning, and implementation. The goal is to prepare them for independent practice upon graduation and licensure. SPTAs (Student Physical Therapist Assistants) are different and work under the direction of a licensed PT.
