How Fast Does an Echo Travel?

Published in Physics of Sound 1 min read

An echo travels at the speed of sound, which is approximately 340 meters per second (m/s).

This speed is dependent on factors such as temperature and the medium through which the sound travels. When we talk about the speed of an echo, we're actually referring to the speed of the sound wave as it travels from the source, to the reflecting surface, and back to the listener.

It is important to remember that when calculating the distance to the reflecting surface using the time it takes for the echo to return, you must account for the sound traveling twice the distance – once to the surface and once back.
