Who Discovered Motion?

Published in Physics 2 mins read

Sir Isaac Newton is widely credited with significantly advancing our understanding of motion. While the concept of motion itself has been observed and pondered since antiquity, Newton's Principia Mathematica Philosophiae Naturalis, published in 1686, formalized the description of motion through his three laws of motion. These laws revolutionized science by explaining the relationship between a physical object and the forces acting upon it. Before Newton, while thinkers like Copernicus and Kepler made advancements in understanding planetary motion, a complete and comprehensive framework for understanding motion in general was lacking. Newton's work provided this framework, forming the basis of classical mechanics.

Newton's Contribution to Understanding Motion

  • Three Laws of Motion: Newton's three laws of motion are foundational to classical mechanics. They describe the relationship between a body and the forces acting upon it, and its motion in response to those forces.
  • Universal Gravitation: Newton's law of universal gravitation, developed around the same time, provided further insight into the forces that cause motion, particularly in celestial bodies.

It's important to note that while Newton significantly advanced the understanding of motion, he didn't discover motion itself. Motion is a fundamental aspect of the universe, observed and studied by many before him. However, Newton's mathematical formulation and laws revolutionized how we understand and predict motion.
