How Do You Sterilize Lip Rings?

Published in Piercing Care 2 mins read

To sterilize lip rings, saline solution is a simple and effective method you can use at home.

Sterilizing Lip Rings with Saline Solution

Here's how to sterilize your lip ring using saline solution:

  1. Soaking: Submerge the lip ring completely in saline solution for a few minutes.
  2. Cleaning: If necessary, gently wipe the jewelry down with a clean Q-tip to remove any debris.
  3. Rinsing (Optional): Rinse with sterile water after the saline soak. This is to remove any excess salt that might irritate the piercing.
  4. Drying: Allow the lip ring to air dry completely on a clean paper towel, or pat it dry with a fresh, lint-free cloth before reinserting.

Important Considerations:

  • Saline Solution: You can purchase sterile saline solution from a pharmacy. Alternatively, you can make your own by dissolving ΒΌ teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt into 1 cup (8 oz) of distilled or bottled water that has been boiled and then cooled. Ensure the salt is fully dissolved.
  • Frequency: Clean new jewelry before initial insertion. Routine cleaning is advisable, especially if the jewelry has been exposed to potential contaminants.
  • Material Compatibility: Saline solution is generally safe for most lip ring materials, including surgical steel, titanium, and glass. However, be cautious with porous materials like wood or stone, as they can harbor bacteria.
