How do you measure pipe to pipe?

Published in Pipe Measurement 2 mins read

To accurately measure pipe dimensions, particularly the Outside Diameter (OD), you can use a measuring tape to find the circumference and then calculate the OD.

Measuring Pipe Outside Diameter (OD)

The most common way to measure pipe to pipe, specifically the outside diameter, involves using the pipe's circumference. You'll need a flexible measuring tape for this.

Steps to Measure Pipe OD:

  • Wrap the Tape: Carefully wrap the measuring tape around the outside of the pipe. Make sure the tape is snug but not too tight to ensure you get an accurate reading.
  • Record the Circumference: Note the measurement where the tape overlaps. This is the circumference of the pipe.
  • Calculate the OD: Divide the circumference measurement by 3.1416 (pi). The result of this calculation is the pipe’s outside diameter.
    • Example: If the circumference of your pipe is measured at 12.5664 inches, dividing by 3.1416 (12.5664 / 3.1416) gives you an outside diameter of 4 inches.
Measurement Action
Circumference Wrap a tape measure around the pipe and record the measurement.
Outside Diameter (OD) Divide the circumference measurement by 3.1416. (OD = Circumference / 3.1416)

Why This Method?

  • This method is more accurate than trying to measure the diameter directly with a ruler or calipers, particularly with larger pipes.

By following these steps, you can effectively measure pipe to pipe, focusing on obtaining the correct Outside Diameter of the pipe.
