What is PVC IPS?

Published in Piping Systems 2 mins read

PVC IPS refers to Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipe that is sized according to the Iron Pipe Size (IPS) standard. This means the pipe dimensions, specifically the outside diameter (OD), conform to the traditional IPS sizing system.

Understanding IPS Sizing

The Iron Pipe Size (IPS) system is a legacy pipe sizing method that historically used the inside diameter (ID) as the nominal size. Although the nominal size was originally related to the ID, modern IPS sizing is more closely tied to the outside diameter (OD).

PVC and IPS

While the original IPS standard was developed for iron pipes, it's also applied to other materials, including PVC. When a PVC pipe is designated as "PVC IPS," it means its OD matches the corresponding IPS standard for that nominal size. This allows for compatibility with fittings and connections that also adhere to IPS dimensions.

Key Characteristics of PVC IPS Pipe:

  • Outside Diameter (OD): The most crucial aspect. The OD of PVC IPS pipe is standardized, ensuring compatibility with IPS fittings.
  • Inside Diameter (ID): The ID will vary based on the schedule or wall thickness of the pipe.
  • Schedule: PVC IPS pipes come in different schedules (e.g., Schedule 40, Schedule 80), which denote the wall thickness and pressure rating. Higher schedule numbers indicate thicker walls and greater pressure resistance.

Applications

PVC IPS pipe is widely used in various applications, including:

  • Plumbing: For potable water distribution and drainage systems.
  • Irrigation: For transporting water to agricultural fields, lawns, and gardens.
  • Industrial: For conveying various fluids and chemicals.

Example

A 1" PVC IPS Schedule 40 pipe will have an OD that conforms to the IPS standard for a 1" pipe. The ID will be slightly less than 1" due to the wall thickness of Schedule 40 PVC.

Important Considerations

  • Always refer to the manufacturer's specifications for precise dimensions and pressure ratings.
  • Ensure that fittings and connections are compatible with PVC IPS pipe.
  • Choose the appropriate schedule of pipe based on the application's pressure and temperature requirements.
