A plankton net operates on a simple yet effective filtration principle. It is primarily a funnel-shaped, fine-meshed net that is towed through the water, allowing scientists to gather the small organisms that are vital to marine ecosystems.

The fundamental way it works is by allowing water to pass through its fine mesh while retaining the plankton. The net concentrates the plankton from hundreds of gallons of water that pass through it.   4. Retrieval: Once the towing is complete, the net is carefully brought back aboard the vessel.
  5. Sample Collection: The cod end is detached, and the concentrated plankton sample is rinsed out and transferred to a sample jar for laboratory analysis.
