  • Examples: Taproots (like carrots), fibrous roots (like grasses), and adventitious roots (like those found on ivy).

Stems

Stems are the main structural axis of a vascular plant.

  • Function: Stems provide support for leaves and reproductive structures, conduct water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves (via xylem), and transport sugars produced during photosynthesis from the leaves to other parts of the plant (via phloem). Some stems also perform photosynthesis.
  • Examples: Woody stems (like tree trunks), herbaceous stems (like sunflower stems), and modified stems such as rhizomes (underground stems) and tubers (like potatoes).

Leaves

Leaves are the primary photosynthetic organs of vascular plants.

  • Function: Their main function is to capture sunlight and carry out photosynthesis, converting carbon dioxide and water into sugars and oxygen. Leaves also play a role in transpiration (water loss) and gas exchange.
