Chlorophyll is a green pigment that gives plants their color. This pigment absorbs red and blue light from sunlight, while reflecting green light.
This is why leaves appear green. When chlorophyll breaks down in the fall, the green color disappears, revealing other pigments that give leaves their autumn colors.
