Favorable Conditions: Cool, moist environments significantly increase the risk of infection.

Symptoms:
- Infected stems develop white to grayish lesions.
- Hard, black sclerotia (survival structures of the fungus) develop inside the infected stems.
- In wet conditions, sclerotia may also appear on the outside of the stems.
