How Do You Grow Spider Plants from Seed?

Published in Plant Propagation 2 mins read

Growing spider plants from seed is less common than propagating them from spiderettes (baby plants), but it's definitely possible! Here's how to do it:

  1. Collect the seeds: After a spider plant flowers, it can produce small, black seeds. Allow the seed pods to dry on the plant. Once dry, gently break them open to collect the seeds.

  2. Prepare a seed-starting mix: Use a well-draining seed-starting mix. You can find this at most garden centers, or you can make your own by combining equal parts peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite.

  3. Sow the seeds: Fill a shallow container with the seed-starting mix. Moisten the mix thoroughly. Sprinkle the spider plant seeds evenly over the surface of the mix. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of the mix. Spider plant seeds need light to germinate, so don't bury them too deep.

  4. Maintain warmth and moisture: Cover the container with a plastic lid or plastic wrap to create a humid environment. Place the container in a warm location, ideally around 70°F (21°C). Keep the mix consistently moist but not waterlogged. You can mist the surface of the mix regularly to maintain humidity.

  5. Provide light: Once the seeds germinate (typically within a few weeks), remove the plastic cover and provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the seedlings.

  6. Fertilize seedlings: After the seedlings have developed a few true leaves, you can start fertilizing them monthly with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to one-fourth the strength recommended on the label.

  7. Transplant seedlings: Once the seedlings are large enough to handle (a few inches tall), carefully transplant them into individual pots filled with a well-draining potting mix.

By following these steps, you can successfully grow spider plants from seed. While it requires patience, the reward of watching these plants develop from tiny seeds can be very fulfilling!
