What is Vegetative Propagation Budding?

Published in Plant Propagation 1 min read

Vegetative propagation budding, also known as bud grafting, is a technique used to create new plants that are genetically identical to the parent plant.

Understanding Budding

Budding is a type of vegetative or clonal plant propagation, meaning it creates an exact replica of the plant from which the bud was taken. This is advantageous for preserving desirable traits of a specific plant.

Types of Budding

There are two primary methods of budding:

  • Chip Budding: This method involves removing a chip of bark and wood from the rootstock (the plant receiving the bud) and replacing it with a similar-sized chip containing the desired bud.
  • T Budding: In T budding, a T-shaped cut is made in the bark of the rootstock, and the bark is peeled back to allow the insertion of the bud.

The key difference between these methods lies in the timing of the procedure and the amount of wood taken along with the bud.
