Is Recycled Plastic Safe to Drink From?

Published in Plastic Safety 1 min read

Potentially not, as recycled plastic bottles may contain more harmful chemicals than those made from new plastic.

A recent study from Brunel University London found that recycled plastic bottles are likely to contain chemicals more harmful than those made from virgin plastic. The study identified 150 chemicals that leached from the plastic into the bottle's contents (24-Mar-2022). This suggests a higher potential for exposure to harmful substances when drinking from recycled plastic bottles.

While recycling is environmentally beneficial, the process can introduce contaminants that might affect the safety of the recycled material, especially when used for food and beverage containers.
