How do I turn on my outside water supply?

Published in Plumbing Basics 1 min read

Turning on your outside water supply usually involves a few simple steps:

  1. Tighten the outdoor spigot: Make sure the wheel or handle on the outside spigot is fully tightened to prevent leaks once the water is turned on.

  2. Locate the water shutoff valve: Find the valve that controls the water flow to your outside faucets. This valve is often located inside your house, typically in the basement, crawl space, or utility room, near where the main water line enters. In some cases, it may be outside, possibly in an underground box.

  3. Turn on the water valve: Slowly open the shutoff valve. If it's a handle valve, turn it until it's parallel with the pipe. If it's a knob, turn it counterclockwise until fully open.

  4. Turn on the outdoor spigot: Go outside and turn on your outdoor spigot to allow water to flow. Check for any leaks around the spigot and the shutoff valve.

If you experience any issues, such as leaks or difficulty turning the valve, consult a qualified plumber.
