How to Install a Shower Head in the Wall?

Published in Plumbing Installation 2 mins read

Installing a shower head involves screwing it onto the shower arm that extends from the wall. The video reference details replacing an existing shower head, so the core principle applies.

Here's how to install a shower head on a shower arm:

  1. Prepare the Shower Arm: Ensure the shower arm extending from the wall is clean and free of debris. If it's old, consider replacing it if it's corroded or damaged. You can find replacement shower arms at most home improvement stores.

  2. Apply Plumber's Tape: Wrap the threaded end of the shower arm with Teflon tape (also known as plumber's tape) in a clockwise direction (when facing the open end of the pipe). This creates a watertight seal and prevents leaks. Apply 2-3 layers of tape.

  3. Attach the Shower Head: Screw the shower head onto the shower arm. Tighten it by hand until it is snug.

  4. Tighten with a Wrench (if necessary): If necessary, use an adjustable wrench to tighten the shower head further. Be careful not to overtighten, as this could damage the shower head or the shower arm. Protect the finish of the shower head by wrapping the wrench jaws with a cloth.

  5. Test for Leaks: Turn on the water and check for leaks around the connection between the shower head and the shower arm. If leaks are present, tighten the connection slightly. If the leaks persist, remove the shower head, apply more plumber's tape, and reattach it.

Important Considerations:

  • Water Pressure: A new shower head can sometimes affect water pressure. Some models are designed to conserve water, which might result in a lower flow rate.

  • Shower Head Type: Different shower heads have different installation requirements. Read the manufacturer's instructions carefully before installation.

  • Diverters: If your shower has a diverter to switch between the shower head and a tub spout, ensure it's functioning correctly after the new shower head is installed.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully install your new shower head.
