How do you remove copper rings?

Published in Plumbing Repair 2 mins read

Removing copper crimp rings from pipes typically involves cutting the ring and then carefully prying it open. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Cut the Ring: Use a suitable cutting tool (such as a rotary pipe cutter, a hacksaw, or even a Dremel with a cutting wheel) to make a single cut perpendicular to the pipe through the copper ring. Be careful not to damage the underlying pipe.

  2. Create an Opening: Insert the flat head of a screwdriver into the cut you just made. Gently twist the screwdriver to widen the gap in the ring. This will help break the crimp's hold on the pipe.

  3. Remove the Ring:

    • Using Pliers: Grip the copper ring on either side of the cut with pliers. Bend the ring outward to further open it and eventually break it completely, allowing you to remove it.
    • Sliding it Off (If Possible): If the pipe end is open and not connected to anything, you might be able to simply slide the opened ring off the end of the pipe.

Important Considerations:

  • Safety First: Always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying debris.
  • Pipe Damage: Be very careful not to damage the copper pipe itself during the cutting and prying process. A damaged pipe will require further repairs.
  • Tool Selection: Choose the appropriate cutting tool for the job. A rotary pipe cutter provides a cleaner cut than a hacksaw, but it may not be suitable for tight spaces.
  • Alternative Methods: While less common, specialized crimp ring removal tools exist. These tools are designed to safely and efficiently remove crimp rings without damaging the pipe.
