How to Change a Hot Water Tap Washer

Published in Plumbing Repair 4 mins read

To change a hot water tap washer, follow these steps carefully to prevent leaks and ensure proper tap function.

Steps to Replace a Hot Water Tap Washer

  1. Turn Off the Water Supply: This is the most important step. Locate the shut-off valve for the hot water supply to the tap. It's usually under the sink or in a nearby utility area. Turn it off completely. If you can't find a local valve, you may need to turn off the main water supply to your house. Then, open the hot water tap to relieve any remaining pressure.

  2. Protect the Sink: Place a towel or cloth over the sink to prevent scratches from tools.

  3. Remove the Tap Button or Cover: Most taps have a decorative button or cover on top of the handle. Gently pry this off using a small flat-head screwdriver or a utility knife. Be careful not to damage the surrounding finish.

  4. Remove the Handle: Once the button is removed, you should see a screw. Unscrew it using the appropriate screwdriver (usually a Phillips head). Once the screw is out, gently pull the handle straight up and off the tap spindle. It might be a little stiff, but avoid forcing it.

  5. Remove the Tap Skirt/Shroud (if applicable): Some taps have a decorative skirt or shroud that covers the tap body. This might be threaded and need to be unscrewed, or it might simply pull off.

  6. Remove the Tap Bonnet/Valve Body: This is the part that houses the valve mechanism and the washer. Use an adjustable wrench to grip the bonnet and unscrew it. Be careful not to damage the surrounding area. Once the bonnet is loosened, you may be able to unscrew it by hand.

  7. Remove the Old Tap Washer: At the bottom of the valve body (inside the bonnet), you'll find the tap washer. It's usually held in place by a small nut or screw. Unscrew or unfasten it to remove the old, worn washer. Inspect the seating surface (where the washer presses) for any damage or corrosion. Clean the seating if necessary, using a seating tool if you have one, or fine emery cloth.

  8. Replace with a New Tap Washer: Purchase a replacement tap washer of the exact same size and type as the old one. Take the old washer to the hardware store to ensure a proper match. Install the new washer in the same way the old one was installed, securing it with the nut or screw.

  9. Reassemble the Tap:

    • Screw the bonnet back onto the tap body, tightening it firmly with the adjustable wrench. Don't overtighten.
    • Reattach the tap skirt/shroud (if applicable).
    • Place the handle back onto the spindle.
    • Secure the handle with the screw.
    • Replace the tap button or cover.
  10. Turn the Water Supply Back On: Slowly turn the hot water supply valve back on. Check for leaks around the tap body, bonnet, and handle.

  11. Test the Tap: Turn the hot water tap on and off to ensure it's working properly and that there are no leaks. If there are leaks, double-check all connections and tighten as needed. If the leak persists, you may need to disassemble and inspect the components again.

Important Considerations:

  • Safety First: Always turn off the water supply before starting any plumbing repairs.
  • Matching Parts: Using the correct replacement washer is crucial to prevent leaks.
  • Corrosion: Check for corrosion and scale buildup on all parts. Clean as necessary.
  • Seating Condition: The condition of the valve seat is critical. If it's damaged, the new washer won't seal properly.
  • Professional Help: If you're uncomfortable with any of these steps, consult a qualified plumber.
