How to Open a Drain in a Kitchen Sink?

Published in Plumbing Repair 2 mins read

One method to open a clogged kitchen sink drain involves using baking soda and vinegar.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Pour in baking soda: Start by pouring one cup of baking soda down the kitchen sink drain.
  2. Add vinegar: Follow the baking soda with one cup of vinegar. This will create a fizzing action.
  3. Cover the drain: Immediately push the drain stopper into place to contain the fizzing mixture.
  4. Wait: Allow the baking soda and vinegar to work for at least 5 minutes. This chemical reaction helps to break down the clog. Longer is better, even 30 minutes if possible.
  5. Flush with hot water: After waiting, carefully pour approximately 5 cups of hot (but not boiling) water down the drain.
  6. Test the drain: Run your tap to see if the water now drains freely. If the drain is still slow, repeat the process.

Alternative Methods:

If the baking soda and vinegar method doesn't fully clear the drain, consider these alternative solutions:

  • Plunger: Use a sink plunger, ensuring there's enough water in the sink to cover the cup of the plunger. A good seal is crucial for creating effective suction.
  • Boiling Water: Sometimes, simply pouring boiling water down the drain can dissolve grease and other substances causing the clog. Use caution to avoid burns and do not use on PVC pipes.
  • Drain Snake: A drain snake (also known as an auger) can physically break up or retrieve the clog. Insert the snake into the drain opening and rotate it as you push it further down.
  • Check the P-Trap: The P-trap is the curved pipe under your sink. Place a bucket under the P-trap, loosen the slip nuts at each end, and remove the trap. Clean out any debris you find inside.

Preventative Measures:

To prevent future clogs:

  • Avoid pouring grease down the drain.
  • Use a drain strainer to catch food particles.
  • Regularly flush the drain with hot water.
