How do you apply PVC pipe glue?

Published in Plumbing 2 mins read

Applying PVC pipe glue (also known as PVC cement) involves a straightforward process to create a strong, leak-proof joint. Here's a breakdown of the steps:

  1. Prepare the pipe and fitting: Ensure the PVC pipe and fitting are clean, dry, and free of dirt or grease.

  2. Check the fit: Make sure the pipe fits snugly into the fitting. It should slide in relatively easily but not be too loose.

  3. Apply primer (Recommended): Use a PVC primer to prepare the surfaces. Apply a coat of primer to both the inside of the fitting socket and the outside of the pipe end. The primer softens the PVC and prepares it for bonding. Allow the primer to dry completely before applying the cement.

  4. Apply the PVC cement: Quickly apply a liberal, even coat of PVC cement to both the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting socket. Be generous, but avoid excessive dripping.

  5. Insert and twist: Immediately insert the pipe into the fitting, pushing it all the way in. Give the pipe a quarter turn as you insert it to help distribute the cement and create a stronger bond.

  6. Hold for 30 seconds: Hold the joint firmly together for about 30 seconds to prevent pushback and ensure a proper set.

  7. Wipe off excess: Use a rag or towel to wipe away any excess glue that squeezes out of the joint.

By following these steps, you can create a strong and reliable PVC pipe joint. The use of primer is highly recommended for optimal bonding.
