How do you clean a shower drain with a plunger?

Published in Plumbing 2 mins read

Here's how to effectively clean a shower drain using a plunger:

  1. Remove the Drain Cover: Start by carefully removing the shower drain cover. This will give you direct access to the drain and prevent the cover from being dislodged or damaged during plunging.

  2. Create a Seal: Place the rubber cup of the plunger directly over the drain opening. For a tighter seal, you can apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) around the rim of the plunger cup. This helps create suction.

  3. Add Water: Add enough water to the shower stall or tub to cover the lip of the plunger cup. The water is crucial for the plunger to work effectively, as it uses hydraulic pressure to dislodge the clog.

  4. Plunge Vigorously: With the cup submerged, firmly push and pull the plunger handle up and down rapidly. Maintain the seal while plunging. The up-and-down motion creates pressure that forces water through the drain, hopefully breaking up or dislodging the clog. Continue this motion for several minutes.

  5. Check the Drain: After plunging for a few minutes, remove the plunger and check if the water drains freely. If the water still drains slowly, repeat the plunging process.

  6. Clean Up: Once the drain is clear, rinse away any debris that has come up. Replace the drain cover.
