How Do You Install a Faucet Aerator?

Published in Plumbing 1 min read

Installing a faucet aerator is generally a simple process involving a few steps.

  1. Remove the old aerator: Depending on the type, you may be able to unscrew it by hand. If it's stuck, use adjustable pliers, being careful not to damage the faucet finish. You may want to wrap the faucet with tape to protect it.

  2. Clean the faucet threads: Remove any debris or old sealant from the faucet threads.

  3. Inspect and replace washers (if needed): Examine the washers that come with your new aerator. In some cases, a thicker washer is included, but you may not need it.

  4. Install the new aerator: Screw the new aerator onto the faucet clockwise.

  5. Hand-tighten: Tighten the aerator by hand until it is snug. Avoid over-tightening.

  6. Test for leaks: Turn on the water and check for leaks around the aerator. If leaks are present, carefully remove the aerator, check the washer placement, and re-tighten. You might need to use the pliers again, but be gentle.
