How to Use a Toilet Auger?

Published in Plumbing 2 mins read

Using a toilet auger is a straightforward process to clear clogs in your toilet. Here's how:

  1. Preparation: Have the toilet auger ready. The most common clogs are usually found in the first section of the drain, built into the porcelain body of the toilet.

  2. Insertion: Carefully insert the flexible end of the auger into the toilet bowl drain opening.

  3. Protection: Use one hand to hold the metal housing of the auger against the porcelain to prevent scratching.

  4. Cranking and Rotating: With your other hand, crank the handle of the auger to rotate the cable. This will help the auger navigate the bends in the toilet drain and break up or retrieve the clog.

  5. Advancement: Continue cranking and gently pushing the auger further into the drain until you feel resistance (the clog).

  6. Breaking Up the Clog: Once you hit the clog, continue cranking to break it up. You might need to pull the auger back slightly and re-insert it to fully clear the obstruction.

  7. Retrieval (Optional): In some cases, the auger might be able to hook onto the clog and pull it out.

  8. Removal: Once you believe the clog is cleared, carefully remove the auger from the toilet bowl. Clean the auger thoroughly.

  9. Test Flush: Flush the toilet to ensure the clog is gone and the water drains properly. You may need to flush multiple times. If the toilet still doesn't flush properly, repeat the process or consider calling a plumber.
