What is the vaccine for pneumonia virus?

Published in Pneumonia Vaccines 2 mins read

There isn't one single vaccine for "pneumonia virus" as pneumonia can be caused by various pathogens, including bacteria and viruses. However, there are vaccines that protect against pneumococcal disease, a major cause of bacterial pneumonia.

Pneumococcal Vaccines

The most common bacterial cause of pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as pneumococcus. Vaccines designed to protect against this bacteria are called pneumococcal vaccines. There are two main types:

  • PCV13 C-13 (Prevnar 13®): This vaccine, often called PCV13, protects against 13 strains of pneumococcal bacteria. It is being replaced with a newer vaccine.
  • PPSV-23 (Pneumovax 23®): This vaccine, known as PPSV23, protects against 23 strains of pneumococcal bacteria. This vaccine is also being replaced by a newer vaccine.

These vaccines are designed to prevent pneumococcal disease, which includes pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. They do not target viral causes of pneumonia.

Newer Vaccines Replacing PCV13 and PPSV23

Newer pneumococcal vaccines are being introduced to replace PCV13 and PPSV23. These newer vaccines offer improved protection against a wider range of strains.

Eligibility for New Vaccines

It is important to note that:

  • Children or adults who have already received all the publicly funded doses of older pneumococcal vaccines are not eligible for additional doses of the newer vaccines at this time.

Summary of Pneumonia Vaccines

Vaccine Name Target Coverage Status
PCV13 (Prevnar 13®) 13 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae Limited number of strains Being replaced
PPSV23 (Pneumovax 23®) 23 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae Broader coverage Being replaced
Newer Vaccines Streptococcus pneumoniae More comprehensive Replacing PCV13/PPSV23

It's crucial to discuss your specific vaccination needs with a healthcare provider, as vaccine recommendations can vary based on age, health status, and other factors.
