Why Do Big Toenails Curve?

Published in Podiatry 2 mins read

Big toenails can curve for several reasons, most commonly due to a condition called pincer nail deformity, but other factors also play a role.

Common Causes of Curving Toenails:

  • Pincer Nail Deformity: This is the most frequent cause, where the nail plate curves excessively, pinching the toe.

  • Genetics: Some people are simply predisposed to having curved toenails due to their inherited nail structure.

  • Footwear: Wearing shoes that are too tight or narrow can put pressure on the toenails, forcing them to grow in a curved shape. This is especially true of footwear with a narrow toe box.

  • Trauma: Injury to the nail bed, even a seemingly minor one, can alter nail growth and lead to curvature. This could be a single, significant impact or repeated micro-trauma.

  • Fungal Infections (Onychomycosis): Fungal infections can distort the nail shape and thickness, contributing to curvature.

  • Certain Medications: Some medications, such as beta-blockers, are associated with nail deformities, including increased curvature.

  • Underlying Medical Conditions: Certain health issues, like psoriasis, kidney disease, and circulatory problems, can affect nail growth and shape.

Addressing Curved Toenails:

The approach to addressing curved toenails depends on the underlying cause. Options include:

  • Proper Nail Trimming: Cutting the nails straight across, rather than rounding the edges, can help prevent ingrown toenails and may reduce curvature over time.

  • Wearing Properly Fitted Shoes: Choose shoes with a wide toe box to avoid compressing the toes.

  • Treating Fungal Infections: Antifungal medications (topical or oral) can eliminate the infection and allow the nail to grow normally.

  • Medical Intervention: In severe cases of pincer nails, a podiatrist may need to surgically correct the nail deformity. Options include nail avulsion (partial or complete nail removal) and matrixectomy (removal of the nail root).

  • Nail Braces: Similar to dental braces, nail braces can be used to gradually reshape the nail over time.

Curved toenails can be caused by several factors, with pincer nail deformity being the most common. Footwear, trauma, fungal infections, certain medications, and underlying medical conditions can also contribute. Treatment varies based on the cause and severity.
