How Do I Put Fish in My Pond?

Published in Pond Fish Introduction 1 min read

To properly introduce fish to your pond, you should first acclimate them to the pond's water temperature before releasing them.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Float the Bag: When your fish arrive in transport bags, avoid immediately dumping them into the pond. Instead, float the sealed bag(s) in the pond for about 20 minutes. This allows the temperature of the water in the bag to gradually equalize with the pond's temperature. This reduces the shock to the fish, which helps them adjust to their new environment and will reduce the stress of moving.

  2. Carefully Release the Fish: After temperature acclimation, gently scoop the fish out of the bag using a soft net. Then, release the fish into the pond. Do not pour the water from the bags into the pond, as it may contain waste products that are not beneficial to the pond environment. Discard the bag water away from your pond.

By following these steps, you will give your new pond fish the best possible start.
