How to Set Up a Stock Tank Pool?

Published in Pool DIY 3 mins read

Setting up a stock tank pool involves prepping the area, modifying the tank for filtration, installing the necessary components, and filling it up. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Stock Tank Pool

  1. Gather Your Supplies: You'll need a stock tank (galvanized steel is common), a pump and filter system (consider a sand filter or cartridge filter), inlet and outlet fittings, a drill with appropriate drill bits, sealant (aquarium sealant or similar), hoses, and any desired accessories like a ladder or comfortable seating.

  2. Prepare Your Ground Surface: Select a level spot in your yard. The area should be flat and free of any sharp objects or debris that could damage the tank. Consider placing a layer of sand or a tarp underneath for added protection and leveling. Important: Ensure the ground can handle the weight of a filled stock tank.

  3. Drill Inlet and Outlet Holes: Determine the placement of your inlet (water coming in) and outlet (water going out to the filter) holes. This will depend on the type of filter system you choose. Use a drill with a hole saw attachment appropriate for the size of your fittings. Drill the holes carefully to avoid damaging the tank.

  4. Install Inlet/Outlet Valves: Securely install the inlet and outlet fittings into the drilled holes. Use sealant to create a watertight seal. Make sure the fittings are compatible with the hoses you'll be using.

  5. Install Plunger Valves (Optional): Plunger valves can be added to the inlet and outlet for easy shutoff when cleaning or performing maintenance on the filter system. This is not strictly necessary, but it is convenient.

  6. Add Your Filter Media (If Applicable): If you're using a sand filter, add the appropriate filter sand according to the manufacturer's instructions. For cartridge filters, ensure the cartridge is properly seated.

  7. Attach the Hoses & Set Up the Filter/Pump: Connect the hoses from the outlet fitting on the stock tank to the pump/filter intake, and from the pump/filter output to the inlet fitting on the stock tank. Ensure all connections are secure and leak-proof. Place the filter/pump on a level surface near the pool, keeping it protected from the elements.

  8. Fill the Pool! Fill the stock tank with water using a garden hose. Once the tank is filled, turn on the pump and filter system to begin circulating and cleaning the water.

Additional Tips for a Successful Stock Tank Pool

  • Water Treatment: Use pool chemicals (chlorine or bromine) to sanitize the water and prevent algae growth. Test the water regularly and adjust chemical levels as needed.
  • Drainage: Plan for how you will drain the pool when necessary. A sump pump or siphon can be used to remove the water. Consider the location of your drainage area to avoid flooding or damaging your yard.
  • Safety: Supervise children closely when they are near the pool. Consider adding a ladder for easy access and exit.
  • Maintenance: Regularly clean the filter and remove any debris from the pool.
